How we test neck massagers

We sell one massager, so testing it is not a review round-up: it is the ordinary work of knowing our own product. Here is what we check, in the order we check it, and what happens when what we find disagrees with the product documentation.

Our criteria

1. What it does to the muscle. Kneading or vibration, and how many contact points actually touch you. Two hand-shaped heads with five silicone fingers each behave differently from a motor buzzing through a strap, and it is the first thing anyone notices in the first minute.
2. Which zones it reaches. We map this on our own unit rather than copying the specification sheet, because the two do not match. The device reaches the calves, which no specification document mentions, and it does not sit flat on the upper back, which its shape suggests it would. Both findings are published.
3. How the pressure is set. A dial gives you three fixed amounts. Straps you pull forward give you a continuous range, which matters because the same device then suits someone with a slim neck and someone who wants it firm.
4. Charge, runtime and what arrives in the box. Time to a full charge, how many sessions it covers, and whether the battery arrives with anything in it. That last one sounds trivial until it is Friday evening and the answer is no, which is why we put it on the product page rather than in the small print.
5. What buyers report after a month. We read every written review we receive. A reservation is data: it is how we learned that the arms do not open wide enough for the upper back, and how we know a first week is better spent on one ten-minute session a day than on several back to back.
